I have a very bad dog. Mac, my twelve year-old lab/pit mix, has, over the years, become the source of many stories within my circle of friends and in my classroom. He provides endless material for status updates, and maybe one day, he will be the inspiration for the book that been simmering inside my soul for quite some time. Mac was a rescue from a job-site that my husband had delivered some pieces of heavy equipment to when he worked for a large equipment company. Based on his size and weight, he was probably no more than a few weeks old. We loved this dog as he was our “first baby.” And, like the birth of a first born-child, there is a period of bliss that overcomes new parents when they meet that sweet baby that can do no wrong. In a blink, something happens- call it sleep-deprivation, insanity, or demonic possession- something happens to shake you from this blissful slumber into the stark reality that you have a being that is dependent on you now and for the rest of your god-given life. At month two, Mac at the ball out of our computer mouse. Shortly thereafter, he ate an entire pack of cigarettes, a bar of soap, and an advertised “indestructible” dog toy. Each of these ingestions landed us at the emergency vet with the bills piling like a blizzard. This pattern has not stopped, and he is entering the latter part of his life. Many days, I have tuned in to Cesar Milan, “The Dog Whisperer” on Direct tv for some guidance and direction. Cesar Milan can surely perform miracles with canine-behavior, and I often wonder what our life would be like with his help. Maybe this month we would not be replacing the staircase he has gnawed to bits or the sofa pillows he annihilated into piles of feather and down.

Dog Bite Prevention Week

This week is National Dog Bite Prevention Week, and we (along with the fine folks at DogToys.com) would love to give you some tips on how to avoid a bad experience with any dog, especially one that you do not know or does not know you. Dogs are a beautiful species with a lot of faithfulness and loyalty to offer to their owners, however, they are a different species then we; however hard you may try, your dog simply just does not understand those waving arms and clapping noises you mistake for communication, whether it be playtime or punishment. Dogs are naturally wild animals, and while many have been domesticated, there are still some simple steps you can take to ensure that you do not have a run-in with an unfamiliar dog. Like many species of animals, dogs must feel comfortable with you before they let their guard down. A lashing out will most likely be out of fear, so you must remember to give a dog a kind and respectful greeting, even let him come up to you first. Let a dog sniff you out, let them get acquainted with your scent; scent is a very important sense to a dog. It gives him a chance to be comfortable around you.

There are many people who are afraid of dogs. You hear stories about dogs growling and becoming hostile around people and wonder why we have them around. However, in most cases, it is simply a problem of etiquette. That is to say that combined with the first paragraph about how to greet a dog, there are a few things that you should not do when encountering a dog, some more obvious than others. Never physically try to hurt a dog, whether it be kicking, hitting or even teasing. No matter your intentions, a dog will see it as a sign of aggression, wouldn’t you? This goes hand in hand with screaming and running around dogs. Again, it doesn’t matter why you are doing these things, a dog will not understand that. Nor will he understand why you are taking his favorite treat or toy away from him. To a dog, these are challenges; they are signs of aggression.

When dealing with strays, there are a few more things to remember, the first being to stay away from them. A stray may have diseases harmful to you, or may just be hostile towards humans. Without constant human contact, one cannot expect strays to be completely domesticated. Never try and bring a stray home. This not only applies to dogs, but any animal. If they are in the wild, that’s where they want to be, that’s where they should be. If, for any reason though, you are bitten or scratched by a stray animal, be sure to tell a doctor right away.

Dog’s really are a man’s best friend. They are loyal and fun and they brighten your day! One should not be apprehensive or scared of dogs as long as the correct actions are taken. Always remember to ask the owner before petting a dog, and treat them with constant respect. There is an obvious communication gap between dogs and humans, but if you are careful and considerate, you should have no problems. Love your dog, and your dog will love you!

My Golden Retriever, Sandy, would always make a walk around the block a tedious and somewhat painful chore. She has zero sled dog blood in her, but she does a convincing job at pulling me around the block as we go for our nightly walks. Dogs Are Helping to Fight Breast Cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Multipet International, a pet toy company whose ever-popular Loofa dog appears in the PetSmart TV commercials, is helping to Battle breast cancer by specially producing a pink Loofa dog.

Dogs have become our new heroes in the battle against cancer: From those trained to detect cancer cells to those who join with hundreds to march to raise awareness, to those who choose to play with the new Multipet pink-ribbon Loofa Dog.

“The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has been selected as our charity-of-choice to receive ongoing contributions from the sale of the pink Loofa Dog,” says Multipet President Mark Hirschberg.

Mars Petcare US, Inc. Recalls Dry Dog Food

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is alerting consumers that Mars Petcare US, Inc. has recalled two dry dog food products because of the potential contamination with Salmonella Schwarzengrund.

The Mars Petcare US, based in Franklin, Tenn. is voluntarily recalling five-pound bags of Krasdale Gravy dry dog food sold in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, and 50-pound bags of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry food sold in Pennsylvania.

The FDA conducted tests on 10 samples, representing seven product brands from the company. Each sample (same size and brand of product) consisted of 15 subsamples, for a total of 150 subsamples. Tests of the 150 subsamples revealed two positive samples; one from the Krasdale Gravy dry food and another from Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry food.

Salmonella can potentially be transferred to people handling pet food, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the product or any surfaces exposed to the product. To date, there have been 64 cases of illness in humans related to Salmonella Schwarzengrund reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); however, none of the reported cases have been directly linked to the recalled product that was tested. The FDA is working with local and state officials, and with officials at the CDC in the investigation.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Well animals can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Wal-Mart Dog Treats Recall

Wal-Mart has quietly removed two brands of Chinese imported dog treats.

Gone from Wal-Mart store shelves...two more pet products imported from China. Chicken Jerky Strips, from Import-Pingyang Pet Products Company, and Chicken Jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading.

Philadelphia TV station WPVI reported a woman's chihuahua died after eating a dog treat purchased there.

wal-mart has been pulling the products from its shelves and blocked its cash registers from ringing them up.

In a statement to CNN, Wal-Mart said, "we will continue to work with the supplier to assure that the highest standards are met. More importantly, our thoughts are with anyone whose pet may have become ill after consuming this product."

The news from Wal-Mart comes just as toy maker Mattel faces another lawsuit stemming from its huge recall of Chinese-made toys.

Jeffrey Killino, Woloshin & Killino, "Mattel said that they have this phenomenal quality control system, well then, how did 20 million recalled toys make it into children's hands? These toys, that are on their way to the US, right now for the Christmas season, have undergone the very same quality control of those that are recalled."

Killino's firm filed a class action suit in Los Angeles Superior Court, demanding Mattel pay for the lead testing of the millions of children who may have been exposed to toxic paint.

Mattel declined to comment to CNN because of the pending litigation.

This weekend, Toys 'R Us began pulling from its shelves, all vinyl baby bibs, after two, from the Chinese company Hamco, tested positive for lead.

The Chinese government has consistently said the vast majority of its products are safe. The Toy Industry Association says the toys on shelves are not dangerous, and the number of recalls shows, the system to safeguard consumers is working.

Making money from your website is as easy as placing a link. Unless you are very new to the web you should be familiar with affiliate programs by now. FDA Expands Its Nationwide Warning About the Risk of Botulism Poisoning From Certain Castleberry's Food Products and Dog Food

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expanding its July 18 warning to consumers. This expansion is for consumers and pet owners regarding canned food products and dog food produced by Castleberry's Food Company of Augusta, Ga., due to the risk of botulinum toxin. Castleberry's is expanding the recall to include all of the following canned products with all "best by" and code dates, and FDA is warning consumers not to purchase or eat any of the canned products listed in the table below.

The agency is expanding its warning based in part on FDA test results and information obtained during a joint FDA and U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection of the Castleberry’s facility in Augusta, Ga.

Exposure to botulinum toxin can be fatal and two people in Texas and two people in Indiana remain seriously ill and hospitalized with botulism poisoning associated with eating Castleberry's Hot Dog Chili Sauce.

While the previous recall and the known illnesses are linked to "best by" dates of April 30 to May 22, 2009, the firm has extended the recall to include all products listed irrespective of "best by" date. The firm is cooperating with FDA in the recall of these products and has ceased processing and distribution.

In addition, Castleberry's is recalling other products containing meat, which are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. USDA is also warning the public not to eat certain brands of Castleberry's products containing meat. Consumers who have any of these products or any foods made with these products should throw them away immediately. Double bag the cans in plastic bags that are tightly closed then place in a trash receptacle for non-recyclable trash outside of the home. Additional instructions for safe disposal can be found at www.cdc.gov/botulism/botulism_faq.htm.

Retailers that have any of these products are asked to assure that they are removed from use and do not accidentally get reintroduced for sale, service or donation. Do not puncture cans or open them in any way for disposal as this will create a potential health hazard. (More information for retailers and foodservice establishments.)

Symptoms of botulism poisoning in humans can begin from 6 hours to 2 weeks after eating food that contains the toxin. Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness that moves progressively down the body, affecting the shoulders first then descending to the upper arms, lower arms, thighs, calves, etc. Botulism poisoning can also cause paralysis of the breathing muscles which can result in death unless assistance with breathing (mechanical ventilation) is provided. Individuals who show these symptoms and who may have recently eaten one of the Castleberry’s products currently under recall should seek immediate medical attention.

The disease has only been seen occasionally in dogs. Ferrets are highly susceptible to botulinum toxin. The incubation period can be 2 hours to 2 weeks; in most cases, the symptoms appear after 12 to 24 hours. Botulism is characterized by progressive motor paralysis. Typical clinical signs may include muscle paralysis, difficulty breathing, chewing and swallowing, visual disturbances and generalized weakness may also occur. Death usually results from paralysis of the respiratory or cardiac muscles. Pet owners who have used these products and whose pets have these symptoms should contact their veterinarian immediately. At this time we are not aware of pet illnesses associated with these products although we recommend that all these products should be discarded.

Menu Foods has previously recalled wet cat and dog food produced with adulterated wheat gluten supplied by ChemNutra Inc. Menu Foods is now expanding the recall to include cuts and gravy and select other products which do not include ChemNutra wheat gluten but which were manufactured at any of Menu Foods’ plants during the period that ChemNutra wheat gluten was used at that plant, to the extent they have not already been subject to a recall, due to the possibility of cross-contamination. Menu Foods has received a report from a customer and has received study results, both of which indicate cross-contamination.

As a result, Menu advises the public:

Additional items in the United States and Canada have been added to the recall list as shown below. A further two varieties for Europe have been added to the recall list.
The recall dates of those products previously recalled have been modified to include all dates during the period that ChemNutra wheat gluten was used in the applicable Menu plant. All of these products, including the expanded dates, have previously been withdrawn from the market and should already be off the retailer shelves.

Menu estimates that this additional recall represents less than 5% of the products that have already been recalled or withdrawn.

Dog treat distributor issues recall

NORTH BERGEN, N.J. (WATE/AP) -- A New Jersey company that produces pig ear dog treats is the latest to annouce a product recall because of contamination.

Petrapport Inc. of North Bergen, N.J., says the dog treats may be contaminated with salmonella, an organism that can cause serious infections in dogs. If there is cross-contamination, in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems could be affected.

Petrapport says it imported the treats from a Chilean company August-December 2006. Testing showed salmonella contamination in samples, and the company said it decided to voluntarily recall the treats.

The treats were sold by BJ's Wholesale Club in its 25-count packages of Berkley & Jensen Full-Cut Pig Ears dog treats with no lot number and only the expiration advisories "BEST IF USED BY 2009" (without referencing a specific month) as well as "BEST IF USED BY SEPTEMBER 2009," "BEST IF USED BY OCTOBER 2009," "BEST IF USED BY NOVEMBER 2009," and "BEST IF USED BY DECEMBER 2009."

Included within the voluntary recall were the following pig ear dog treats, with item numbers and lot numbers, sold in bulk by other retailers under the Petrapport brand: 8915 Bulk Low Fat Pig Ears, Lots 101808 & 102108; 8772P Two-Pack Bulk Pig Ears, Lot 101707; 8770P 12-Pack Bulk Pig Ears, Lot 101707; 8774P 24-Pack Bulk Pig Ears, Lot 101907; 7416 1-lb. Bulk Pig Ear Strips, Lot 101907; and 7425 24-oz. Bulk Pig Ear Strips, Lot 5039.

No confirmed illnesses were reported. Consumers should immediately stop feeding these treats to their dogs. Consumers should discontinue use of the products and may return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. For information, contact Petrapport at 800-447-3872, ext. 110.

(AP) COLUMBIA, S.C. South Carolina, along with the federal government, are investigating the deaths of dozens of dogs that ate contaminated dog food.

All the animals are believed to have eaten the Diamond Pet Foods brand.

The company has recalled 19 varieties of dog and cat food because tests showed high levels of aflatoxin. The substance is a naturally occurring toxic chemical from a fungus found on corn and other grains.

South Carolina nursing student Shanika Stewart has to force feed her nine-year-old Chow, Cocoa, with a syringe six times a day. It suffered liver damage after eating tainted food. Her other dog, Chulo the pit bull, died of liver failure last month.

Holidays from a Dog’s Perspective

Okay. This year I've just got to ask! This is my fifth holiday season. That's 35 holiday seasons in human years. Yet, I'm perplexed. Here's my quandary.

Routinely, you go away every morning – to do goodness knows what, and I guard the house between my naps. (What can I say? It's a dog's life.) Then you're home eight hours later wanting to play with me and my squeaky toys. So I indulge you until you're worn out, and we snuggle in front of the television until it's time to do it all over again.

Now, I think this is a very nice routine. So why do you insist on doing everything differently this one week of the year?

You're home all day doing the oddest things, and I can't sleep.
You're gone in the evening, and that's OUR time.
You play strange music – some with dogs barking in it. (You don't laugh when I bark like that!).
You bring outside things inside. And I must say, I'm confused about the whole "go potty" routine at this point. I "go" under trees outside – why is it different in the house? (By the way, the cat doesn't know the difference either. He's hanging on a branch this very minute!)
You bring out all these shiny, bling bling things that I'm not allowed to sniff or chew.
The doorbell is driving me nuts. I'd disconnect it if I had a screwdriver!
And worst of all – you embarrass me. Those reindeer antlers are ridiculous!

Although I don't understand any of this, I'm willing to compromise and let you proceed with your strange traditions, because I love you so much and am devoted to your happiness. Invite all those people over. Just know they're going to spill things on the carpet – so don't blame me for -- well, you know. And, please tell your guests in lieu of hostess gifts you'd like them to go to www.dogtoys.com and bring me cinna-swirls, p-nutty biscottis and chip nips so that you can stop feeling guilty every time you tell me "no" when I beg for a cookie.

The on/off switch is easy to locate even through the bag [kitty can even turn it back on all by himself too - that is if he is playing with the bag when in the off position]. Apparently this cat toy will run for several minutes and eventually turn itself off [at least our does - unless the cat can also turn it off by playing with it]. The motorized Thing in a Bag is not always the cat's favorite toy, but it does offer up a nice diversion every now and again!

Found this store today when looking for the play and squeak mouse [my kitties LOVE them!]. The play-n-squeak mouse is one of my cats FAVORITE toys of all time! If you are unfamiliar with them it is a little mouse with a chip inside that squeaks whenever that cat bats at it. My cats go crazy for them [not sure if there is catnip in them or not --- I hide them in a bag of nip and get them out one at a time. The combo catnip and squeak drives kitties nuts].

Pit'rPats are a 'candy' for cats and cats go crazy over them [not sure if it is the liver flavor or what].
